Nautilus is one of many programs available to browse files graphically, all have their good and bad points. The most effective way to browse files in linux is in your terminal but there are some advantages to these graphical programs. The features I particularly like about nautilus are the thumbnailed pictures and the detailed information you can obtain about pictures when you double click on them to open them in a viewer.
Start up comand: nautilus --no-desktop
