Gaim is how I chat to all my friends online. It is very like msn/icq/etc and is complete with emoticons and buddy pictures. I am also impressed that every time msn changes its protocals and gaim stops working the developers are very quick to get gaim working again. You use your existing msn/icq/etc accounts so you have no excuse for not chatting to your friends.
